Liu Bolin - "Hiding in the City."

"Each image requires meticulous planning and execution: as both artist and performer, Liu directs the photographer on how to compose each scene before entering the frame. Once situated, he puts on his Chinese military uniform, which he wears for all of his Invisible Man photographs and, with the help of an assistant and painter, is painted seamlessly into the scene. This process can sometimes take up to 10 hours with Liu having to stand perfectly still. Although the end result of Liu’s process is the photograph, the tension between his body and the landscape is itself a manifestation of China’s incredible social and physical change. Simultaneously a protester and a performance artist, Liu completely deconstructs himself by becoming invisible, becoming a symbol of the humanity hidden within the confines of a developing capital." Save the Children - Creative card

Problem: 

Street children are a global problem. In China, informal statistics have up to 1.5 million children living on the streets, of which up to 79% are exploited by criminals who force the children into picking through garbage, begging, performing or stealing. These children are trapped in a life of pain and suffering where malnutrition and abuse are all they know. For the average person on the street the sight of these children is disturbing but nothing new, and as much as they’d like to help they don’t know how.

Creativity: 

Our dramatic photographs incorporate actual strings to represent the puppet-like manipulation of children caught in these situations. The strings are held in place by a removable banner which describes the plight of the children. When the banner is torn off by the reader the strings are released and information is revealed to tell the reader how they can help. These cards are distributed in large cities and urban areas around China to inform people about Save the Children, an international charity organization dedicated to rescuing children from exploitation.

Julien Mauve - Back To Childhood

"A few months ago, I was hanging around in my grandparent's attic. What I found among other things was a box full of toys I used to play with as a child. Each of them reminded me of a particular moment of my childhood and I felt emotionally connected to them. 

 Instead of storing them back into their box, I tried to imagine what they could look like in our adult world. Going further than their power to generate nostalgia, toys offer those who animate them a marvelous power to reinvent the world."
